Bullroarer
A flat slat of wood, rotated on the end of a long cord, that produces a loud pulsating growl audible for miles.
Physical Principles
A bullroarer consists of a thin wooden slat, typically 20–30 cm long, attached to a cord of approximately 1 meter in length. The operator holds one end of the cord and swings the slat in a large circle. As the slat rotates, it spins around its long axis, and the interaction between the slat's surface and the surrounding air produces a loud, pulsating growl. The sound is generated by vortex shedding — as air flows over the oscillating slat, alternating vortices detach from opposite edges, creating pressure fluctuations that propagate as sound waves.
Frequency and Propagation
The fundamental frequency of a bullroarer depends on the rotation speed, the slat dimensions, and the cord length. A typical bullroarer rotated at approximately one revolution per second produces a sound with a fundamental frequency near 120–180 Hz, with strong harmonics extending into the kilohertz range. The low-frequency component provides long-range propagation because low frequencies are less attenuated by atmospheric absorption and less easily blocked by terrain features. Reports from Australian Aboriginal communities describe bullroarer signals being heard clearly at distances of several kilometers, and faintly at much greater distances in open terrain.

In Aboriginal Australian cultures, the bullroarer — sometimes called a "churinga" in some regions, though churinga more properly refers to sacred objects — held deep ceremonial significance. It was classified as a "sacred-secret" communication device, meaning its use was restricted to initiated men and certain ceremonies. The sound of the bullroarer was associated with ancestral beings and creation narratives. In some communities, the bullroarer was used to announce the beginning of ceremonies, to communicate between camps, and as a teaching tool for younger generations.

Bullroarers have been documented on every inhabited continent. In Europe, carved bone artifacts dating to approximately 20,000 years ago have been identified as possible bullroarer fragments. Ancient Egypt used bullroarers in religious contexts. In Africa, they served as signaling devices between villages. Native American peoples used them for similar purposes. The widespread distribution suggests that the bullroarer may represent one of the earliest human inventions for long-distance communication, predating even the development of musical instruments in the conventional sense.
Modern Applications and Study
The bullroarer has attracted scientific interest for its unusual acoustic properties. Australian acoustics researchers have measured the sound spectrum of various bullroarer designs, finding that the signal is a complex combination of periodic components and broadband noise. The device has no moving parts in the conventional sense — the sound arises entirely from the aerodynamic interaction between the rotating slat and the air. In modern times, bullroarers are primarily used for educational demonstrations, cultural preservation, and occasional ceremonial purposes in Aboriginal communities.
