BBS and Online Services
Before the World Wide Web, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were the online gathering places.
The First BBS: CBBS
On February 16, 1978, Ward Christensen and Randy Suess released the Computerized Bulletin Board System (CBBS) in Chicago. Born during a blizzard that kept them home from the Chicago computer club meeting, CBBS ran on an S-100 bus computer (an IMSAI 8080) with a singleHayes Smartmodem 300 operating at 300 baud. The phone number was (312) 849-1132. Callers could leave messages, download files, and chat — this was the beginning of the online community revolution. CBBS remained operational for over 30 years.
FidoNet: BBS Networking
By the mid-1980s, FidoNet emerged to connect BBS systems worldwide. Using store-and-forward technology, FidoNet nodes would dial each other (typically at night when phone rates were lowest) to exchange messages and files. The addressing scheme used a hierarchical Zone:Net/Node format: Zone 1 (North America), Zone 2 (Europe), Zone 3 (Oceania/Asia), with Net and Node numbers identifying specific networks and systems.
FidoNet used XMODEM, YMODEM, and later ZMODEMfile transfer protocols for reliable data exchange over error-prone modem connections. XMODEM (Ward Christensen, 1977) used 128-byte blocks with single-byte checksums. YMODEM added 1024-byte blocks and CRC-16. ZMODEM (Chuck Forsberg, 1986) added resume capability and sliding window flow control.
A message from California to New York might take 24-48 hours to arrive — but it was free, unlike long-distance telephone calls. Zone Mail Hour (typically 01:00–02:00 local time) was the designated window when all nodes in a zone would exchange mail, minimizing phone charges.
Echomailwas FidoNet's answer to Usenet newsgroups. Echomail conferences were topic-based discussion forums that propagated across the network via a store-and-forward chain. Each conference had a topic name (e.g., COMP.OS.LINUX, FIDO.HEALTH) and propagated node-to-node, with each system adding its own copies to the feed. A popular echomail conference could span thousands of BBS systems worldwide.
CompuServe: The Big Online Service
CompuServe launched in 1969 as a timesharing service for businesses. By the 1980s, it offered consumer access to information services, email, forums, and eventually internet connectivity. At its peak, CompuServe had over 1 million subscribers accessing the service via local phone calls in major cities.
Prodigy and Quantum Link
IBM and Sears launched Prodigy in 1985, promising "the online service for everyone." Quantum Link (Q-Link) launched the same year, later renamed AOL (America Online). Both services introduced millions of users to online experiences with graphical interfaces and easy point-and-click navigation.
The AOL Phenomenon
In 1993, AOL introduced flat-rate pricing ($9.95/month unlimited), triggering explosive growth. The iconic "You've got mail" voice greeting became a cultural phenomenon. By 1995, AOL had 20 million subscribers and was burning cash on CD-ROM mailings to every household in America.
The Transition to Internet
As internet access became widespread in the late 1990s, BBS traffic declined sharply. Forums, email, and file sharing all moved to web-based platforms. By 2005, the BBS era was essentially over, though some nostalgic boards still operate today via telnet and modern emulators.
